
make.md is part of a personal quest for a digital system to organize my life. As tech is more pervasive and easily accessible than ever, more and more of the aspects of work and life can now be organized digitally, freeing up mental and physical clutter. However, most of the way to keep track of our information is in different apps with data either on the cloud or different formats with no way to connect them. Overtime, the interface and format changes and habits and workflows are broken while important memories and documents becomes inaccessible.

After moving through multiple systems and with some spare time, I created what needed for my personal digital system and found that many in the community was looking for the exact same thing and facing the same problems. We designed the system with three principles in mind to what we think the perfect system needs to have.

### Principles of make.md

**Remove barriers between data**
Data that you have for any part of your system should be readable and useable by any other part of your system. Instead of data living in silo and specific formats and relying on yet another set of tools for integration, make.md removes those barriers and allow information to be in one place.

**Making over context switching**
One of the primary reasons for digitalizing our data is that we can keep information organized and accessible without cluttering our mind and physical spaces. When we introduce new interfaces, syn-tax and barriers, it takes our mind out of what we want to spend our time on. make.md prioritizes intuitive interfaces and natural modes of interaction over coding and scripting.

**Fully customizable workspace**
Your life and workflows are unique. Whether you have specific ways of organizing information, different tastes in style, your digital workspace should reflect that. make.md comes with a set of easy-to-use workspaces that are completely customizable to your workflow and style.

- Object types allow you to create nested properties that can be used to store more complex data structures. You can use most of the basic property types in an object type. Each row will conform to the same object type. You can also use a multi object type to create a list.

### Kanban Board

- Quickly create a kanban board using the Card View and Grouping By the property.
- Contexts comes with a set of views to visualize and edit your data. The default view is a list view and you can change that view into table view, board view, calendar views.

### Calendar View

- Calendar views lets you view a specific context in a month, week or day view. 
- In order for a context to work as a calendar, it will need a start and end properties with Date type and an optional repeat property.
- You can change the hour which your day view and week view by changing the start and end hour, enter a value between 0-24 to set the hour.
- Adding Events
	- Drag and dropping a path into the month view or day view allows you to directly pin the item to the space and set the time. In the day/week view, you can also click and drag to create an event. In the month view, double click to create an event.
- Editing Events
	- Drag and drop events up and down or resize the event to change the time duration.
- Repeating Events
	- You can set repeat interval for an event by setting a property to store the repeat information. The property type for repeat is an object type with a specific set of properties which can be added in the Special type.

Contexts define a set of properties and views for any space. 
- Contexts are great for specific projects, types of information like media library or across your system as an organization system

Navigator.md

The overview is a special view that turns your workspace into a three panel space. When you have the overview open, clicking on any folder or tag will now open that in the overview which then you can select the note or folder you want to open.

Personalizing your Spaces

Under the hood, make.md runs as an engine that both keeps your information organized as well as turns the information into visualizations and workflows. This note goes into some of the architectural aspects of how make.md is designed for those interested.

### Superstate

The superstate is how information in your vault is kept connected and ensures quick access to information during runtime. When you start make.md, the superstate initiates and indexes all the files and notes you need for your workspace. As you work in your system, the superstate reacts and updates its connections so that links are automatically updated. The cached superstate is stored so that when you launch your vault again, the index loads immediately.
### Paths and Spaces

Everything in make.md is represented as an unique path. For example, when working in Obsidian, that path is the relative path from your vault root. Notes, folders, tags, tables, views and blocks all have their individual paths so that they can be linked from another part of your vault. The superstate reads through all your paths and keeps track of which paths are connected to other paths, which spaces they are in and etc. Spaces, contexts and views also keep track of their own information, for example, commonly used views are cached so they can render as soon as you open them. 
### Contexts

Contexts are SQLite database files for each of your folder or tag that stores the schema and data for each of your folders. Each context is stored with the folder under the .space config folder. When you make edits to the data or add additional items to the folder, your context database is automatically updated. 
### Views

In order to make sure that you are able to customize your workspace without any code, make.md comes with its own view compositor system. Each folder or tag comes with a main view which is defined by a series of subviews called frames. Each frame can be a context view, a note view, an image, a group or another predefined frame. There are a set of predefined frames that are built to compose your views quickly such as buttons, cards, tabs, list view items and more.

### Data Storage

Make.md stores configurations for spaces, contexts and views inside of the .space folder of each folder. These files are not created by default so only the folders you customize will contain these folders. For markdown files, properties are stored directly in the frontmatter of the file while for non-markdown files, it's stored inside the context database file.
